The Red Elephant Foundation – in conjunction with TransConflict, the Man-Up Campaign, the Give Me 5 Campaign, and the Youth Forum CSW – will be hosting a 24 hour live tweet-a-thon on April 7, 2016 in honour of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwandan Genocide.

The key themes that the tweet-a-thon will explore using the hashtag #REFSpeak include:

  1. The definition of “Genocide” should be expanded to include wartime rape and sexual violence (drawing from the decision in Akayesu)
  2. The occurrence of conflict-related sexual violence is not a by-product of war but a live concern we should address.
  3. The adequacy of UNSCR 1325 in the context of current day conflict
  4. The changing nature of conflict and sexual violence and rape in that context – specifically ISIS, Arab Spring and Drone Warfare
  5. Sexual violence and rape refugees and displaced populations
  6. Sexual violence and rape of men in a conflict setting.
  7. Sexual violence and rape in a post-conflict setting.
