Establishment of An Albanian National Council

TransConflict Serbia supports the establishment of an Albanian National Council as the official representative body of the Albanian community in Serbia.

Updates:

Exercising this important legal right constitutes the most effective way of institutionalising, protecting and upholding the cultural autonomy, education and minority rights of the Albanian community in Serbia, particularly with respect to the official use of language, thereby strengthening the community's voice, image and influence at all levels of society.

The decision by Albanian parties to participate in the 2008 parliamentary elections is evidence of an emerging political dynamic which suggests that the formation of a national council is now a realistic and achievable goal.

In order to complement and assist on-going efforts to build consensus amongst the Albanian community in support of establishing a national council, TransConflict Serbia will work in co-operation with a variety of actors, including the respective Albanian politicians and political parties, citizens and civil society actors in southern Serbia, and the Co-ordination Body for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja.
