Security

The existence of persistent security threats constitutes one of the main potential sources of conflict, particularly in areas of multi-ethnic diversity. Throughout the Western Balkans, underdeveloped notions of human security, particularly at the local level, have inhibited the development of security mechanisms that are attentive to the needs and concerns of all citizens and their local communities.

Without sufficient confidence in the willingness and/or capacity of the local police and security forces to protect all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, individuals and groups often feel vulnerable to discrimination and intimidation. In order to counter this dynamic, TransConflict works with local communities to provide and promote confidence building mechanisms through which grievances can be voiced and overcome.
