Main Aims and Objectives

The Women’s Peace Center (WPC) is a women’s organization based in Burundi and engaged to be equitable in its mission to contribute to the promotion of a democratic culture, based upon the promotion of peace and security environment trough the increase of women’s power of action.

One of WPC’s main objectives is to reinforce women’s capacities and to promote women’s initiatives in peace consolidation, in democratic governance participation and in the protection of women’s rights.

Upholding the Principles of Conflict Transformation

To develop a system for the consolidation, analysis and publication of data on incidences of gender-based violence (GBV) and the effectiveness of referral and service provision, thereby providing insights into conflict transformation.

Where and with Whom

WPC works with national and international organizations, such as Care International, Cordaid, NCA, Cord UK, ONUFEMME, the Urgent Action Fund, Co-operation Suisse, Oxfam Novib, Action Aid, CRS and 150 women’s associations and groupings.

WPC works throughout Burundi.

Main Activities in the Field of Conflict Transformation

WPC’s main activities include:

  • Promoting the effective contribution of UN Resolutions 1325 and 1820 of to the well-being of women
  • Raising awareness of female leaders and the public on violations of women’s rights through the production of a film entitled “Violations done to Women During the War2, supported by UNIFEM.
  • Sensitization on the prevention of war in Buterere area, Bujumbura city, Mubimbi in Bujumbura rural areas and at Mbuye in Muramvya, and in the all east provinces
  • Assistance to orphaned children of war through school materials and food to recipient families.
  • Inscription services for civil government identification for 600 children from Bujumbura.
  • Creation of clubs “Stop violations to women during the war” in secondary schools, to raise awareness about human rights amongst young people.
