Main Aims and Objectives
AHADI promotes health, good governance, and better quality of life for all, specifically amongst the poor and disadvantaged in Africa, through communication for behavioural change and policy advocacy. AHADI provides trainings on conflict mitigation, diversity, leadership, non-violence and conflict sensitive journalism, with a particular focus on youth.
Upholding the Principles of Conflict Transformation
After the 2007/2008 post-election violence, AHADI organized a regional conference on ethnic diversity as a resource for Eastern Africa, and brought together members of parliament, intellectuals and opinion makers from the region to reflect on the benefits of diversity in political, economic and social development. AHADI has also worked with th National Cohesion and Integration Commission to facilitate national conversations on diversity, and to develop Kenya’s ethnic and race relations policy. AHADI has organized wide ranging trainings on conflict sensitive journalism and on transformative leadership in Kenya. AHADI has also undertaken health work in Uganda and Tanzania, mainly with the media, as health promotion to be crucial in sustainable peace. AHADI has documented and archived events related to the 2007/2008 violence in Kenya and are working with the Panel of Eminent African Personalities (PEAP) to archive the Kenya National Dialogue and Reconciliation process.
Where and with Whom
AHADI is registered in Kenya and Uganda. Though located in Nairobi, AHADI’s works closely with a wide range of NGOs, including the Legal Resources Foundation, Safer World, the Centre for Conflict Research and its partner institution, Twaweza Communications. AHADI collaborates with public institutions, such as the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, and has a strong network with Community Based Organizations in Kenya. AHADI is part of the Global Leadership Network.
Main Activities in the Field of Conflict Transformation
AHADI provide trainings and are active in policy advocacy for inclusive politics and social and economic rights. AHADI’s engagement with national cohesion and its role in the formulation of a national policy on ethnic and race relations is transformative. Further, AHADI’s ongoing work with youth leadership and non-violent ways of expressing dissent are particularly important. In August 2012, AHADI will run a national conference on Youth and the Implications of Peaceful and Fair Elections in Kenya.
