Main Aims and Objectives

In Nigeria, as a developing country facing diverse challenges, there is a clarion call on all stakeholders to contribute towards its achievement. Peace Point Action (PPA) is an non-governmental, service-oriented organization founded in 2005 to address the needs of vulnerable communities in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria targeting the children, youth and women on issues of environmental justice, good governance, HIV and AIDS prevention, health and gender. PPA strategy involves the use of arts, community drama and music as tools for community mobilization and behaviour change.

PPA’s mission is to assist indigent people of the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria affected by negative environmental circumstances, educational, health and other social-related issues, including HIV and AIDS and governance, through strategically-designed, sustainable programs.

PPA’s vision is to create a society were all vulnerable groups have equal access to developmental services.

Given the wide range of intervention thematic areas, PPA’s core areas of strength include:

• Advocacy;
• Community mobilization/sensitization;
• Environmental justice interventionsl
• Using community theatre (dramas and plays) as a veritable tool in engaging youths (in and out of school) on issues of HIV & AIDS, TB and other STIs;
• Adolescent sexual and reproductive health;
• Strategic Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC);
• Empowerment programs through trainings and research.

Upholding the Principles of Conflict Transformation

PPA engages in various conflict/peacebuilding activities as a member of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) Nigeria. PPA is currently carrying out the ‘Strengthening Humanitarian Coordination through Developing Community based Contingency Plan for effective Humanitarian Intervention in Calabar, Cross state’.

PPA also belong to Partners for Peace in the Niger Delta (P4P) Network and currently engaging in conflict assessment in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States of Nigeria, which goes a long way to upholding the Principles of Conflict Transformation.

PPA’s partners are the National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Oil Spill in Niger Delta (NACGOND), Civil Society Network on HIV&AIDS (CiSHAN), the Global Greengrant Fund, the UNDP, UNICEF/EU, WSSSRP/EU, AFRIHEALTH, the Budget Transparency & Accountability Initiative Nigeria (BTAN), HOPE Worldwide Nigeria, the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organization on Environment (NGOCE), the West African Network for PeaceBuilding (WANEP), Partners for Peace in the Niger Delta (P4P), the Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC Nigeria)/UNICEF/IBP, CIRDDOC Nigeria/DFID/IBP, the Civil Society Network on Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN), the Cross River Department of Civil Society and NGOs, the Cross River Integrated Water Resource Management Committee (CRIWRMC), Stop TB Partners and White Ribbon (USA).

Main Activities in the Field of Conflict Transformation

PPA is currently carrying out the ‘Strengthening Humanitarian Coordination through Developing Community based Contingency Plan for effective Humanitarian Intervention in Calabar, Cross state’. Also, as a Partners for Peace in the Niger Delta (P4P) member organization, PPA are also engaged in conflict assessment project in Cross River and Akwa Ibom State, plus other peacebuilding interventions within the crises prone communities of the states.

PPA advocates for environmental justice in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria, responding to lingering environmental degradation associated with oil spills and gas flaring that often causes crises in the community. The organization has built the capacity of young community members in oil producing areas in Akwa Ibom State on how to peacefully engage the oil producing companies on the need for corporate accountability and sustainable oil exploration.

In addition, PPA promotes accountability in governance as a means to reduce frequent uprisings between Government and citizens. PPA also plays a leading role in State/Local Government budget accountability through a Sub-National Budget Transparency Survey carried out in Akwa Ibom State with funding from Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre/UNICEF/IBP in 2011, whilst the second phase (2014-2015) is on-going with funding from Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre/DFID/IBP.

PPA belongs to a credible network of NGOs called the ‘Budget Transparency Accountability Initiative (BTAN)’, whose aim is to track how members spent funds received from International Donors and also engages in all Cross River State/Local Government budget processes.
