The call for submissions for the fourth edition of the Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival is now open. After three successive years of receiving inspiring films, young film-makers are again invited to share their vision with us through their film-making and to ‘Reinvent Bridges’.

TransConflict is pleased to present ‘The Bosnian Project, which explores the question of  identity in Bosnia-Herzegovina – particularly whether or not there is a shared, Bosnian identity? 

Are post-conflict societies that foster, promote, and develop their cultural industries providing important reconciliation benefits to their communities? If so, should governments make cultural policy a vital part of their post-conflict reconstruction plans?

TransConflict organized a fourth working breakfast, entitled ‘Understanding far right extremism’, as part of the project, ‘Understanding and combating extremism in Serbia’.

As the process and result in the trial of Anders Breivik shows, a true liberal democracy outlaws actions, not ideas – in contrast to totalitarian systems, which brands certain ideas as insane and/or criminal. 

TransConflict organized a third working breakfast – on the challenges of transitional justice in the former Yugoslavia – as part of its recently-launched project, ‘Understanding and combating extremism in Serbia’.

Right-wing extremism – and even terrorism – can exist and flourish without political participation and the success of radical right-wing parties, yet it cannot exist without the unchallenged xenophobic and populist sentiments of the public.

At a second working breakfast, organised on 22nd November as part of the project ‘Understanding and combating extremism in Serbia’, TransConflict had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Marko Savković and Mr. Saša Đorđević, researchers from the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP), who addressed the participants on the topic of violence in sport.

As part of its new project, ‘Understanding and combating extremism in Serbia’, TransConflict Serbia organized a training on advocacy campaign development, designed to strengthen responses to instances of extremism.

It is the emergence of homogeneous thought and dogmatism – impermeable to dialogue with anyone perceived to be outside the group, and built around rigid understandings of identity and enmity – that fuels the threat of terrorism.
